The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated individual to provide scientific and technical support services in Herbarium management, selected Herbarium functions and services, and participate in research activities.

This position requires a degree in Natural Sciences, Life Sciences, Ecology, Biology, Botany, or equivalent and relevant qualification with NQF 7. Postgraduate qualification or equivalent and relevant qualification at NQF 8 will be an added advantage. 8 years’ experience in the relevant field, 4 years of which should be in the first line management position(s).

The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: extensive knowledge of biodiversity biobank collections management techniques and methodologies; comprehensive knowledge and understanding of national and global biodiversity biobanks; strong leadership capabilities and management skills; extensive knowledge of project management and stakeholder management skills; in-depth understanding of national and global biodiversity conservation legislation, policies, procedures, processes, practices, systems, and frameworks; advanced planning, organizing, problem solving skills; excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills; excellent computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including (Ms Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Outlook). The possession of a valid driver’s licence with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel is essential.

Key Performance Responsibilities include:

  • Provide strategic direction and leadership for national biodiversity biobanks;
  • Lead the development and manage the national biodiversity biobank collections;
  • Manage and coordinate the provision of biobank services;
  • Maintain facilities and equipment of the national biodiversity biobank; and
  • Manage and monitor projects and progress related to Divisional and National Herbarium priorities.
