The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated and professional individual to develop, manage, coordinate, and facilitate Groen Sebenza Phase II Programme in partnership with the environmental/biodiversity sector and in line with the Biodiversity Human Capital Development Strategy and Groen Sebenza principles and the funder’s aspirations.

This position requires a degree in Natural Sciences, Life Sciences, Ecology, Biology, Botany, or equivalent qualification with NQF 7. Postgraduate qualification or equivalent and relevant qualification at NQF 8 will be an added advantage. 8 years’ experience in the relevant field, 4 years of which should be in the first line management position(s).

The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: extensive knowledge and understanding of project management techniques, tools, methodologies; and frameworks; strong leadership capabilities and management skills; extensive knowledge and experience in managing and delivering multiple projects with multiple stakeholders and funders; Proven ability and experience in general project management skills (work plans, monitoring & evaluation, etc.); certification in project management, development and implementation would be advantageous; in-depth understanding of national and global biodiversity conservation; knowledge about legislation pertaining to biodiversity conservation; knowledge and skills on national and global policies on skills development; project management knowledge and skills to ensure deliverables are done according to contracts, work plan and budget; knowledge of the management of organisational and project finance, including procurement and financial management policies; demonstrate advance knowledge of financial management external to SANBI, that is, budgeting for proposals, report to donors, budgeting and reporting, etc; comprehensive knowledge about government Human Resources Management, Supply Chain Management, Information Technology Management including Corporate Governance policies, procedures, and processes is essential; being highly organised and efficient; a clear-thinker able to solve problems and see all sides of a situation; ability to manage high pressure and juggling multiple stakeholders each with their own challenges whilst multi skilling across multi projects simultaneously; must have excellent project content writing, reporting writing and minute-taking for high-level meetings; proven ability to perform monitoring & evaluation of multi projects; proven ability to work under pressure with diverse team while being quality and safety conscious; extensive knowledge and experience in working with legislation, policies, procedures, processes, practices, systems, and frameworks related project and programme management, funding, and stakeholders, clients, and funding management; excellent communication (both verbal and written); excellent computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including (Ms Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Outlook).

The possession of a valid driver’s licence with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel is essential.

Key performance responsibilities include:

  • Provide effecting planning, coordination, and management of Groen Sebenza Phase II Programme;
  • Provide effective management of project funds, assets and human resources;
  • Attend to monitoring, evaluation, and reporting matters of the project in accordance with systems and procedures at SANBI and Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and Environment; and
  • Ensure that there is proper stakeholder liaison, communication, and management.
