The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for dependable, hard-working and self- motivated individuals to effectively provide support to community projects such as, but not limited to, livestock and rangeland management, fire management, spring protection and food garden establishment.

The successful candidates must have sound interpersonal skills, the ability to communicate in English and any  other official languages (read and write). Relevant working experience in any of the key responsibilities will be an added advantage.

The successful candidates must be willing to work independently as  well as in a team. The nature of these positions requires a certain degree of physical labour (field work). Applicants must have minimum Grade 12 (Matric). Applicants must demonstrate trade skills and experience in any of the areas mentioned below. Furthermore, applicants must be S.A Citizens and reside within the local municipality within the uThukela catchment (proof of residence required i.e. letter from the Ward Committee/ traditional authority or utility bill)  i.e AmaZizi, AmaNgwane and AmaSwazi. An applicant must be physically and medically fit to do manual labour.

Key responsibilities:

Among other duties, the successful candidates will be expected to perform manual labour including:

• Collecting data on livestock grazing management, collecting data on springs to assess the status quo of water resources (springs) which are largely critical for their role in water supply for the communities at the foothills of the Drakensberg, community fire management.
• Documenting lessons and monitoring the community action around spring protection and utilization.
• Supporting the establishment of household food gardens.
• Monitor the impact of the food gardens on households.
• Create awareness at schools about climate change and the importance of water resources and initiate.
• Support community fire management.
