An exciting career opportunity is available to a highly motivated and appropriately qualified young scientist who will contribute to the South African National Biodiversity Institute’s (SANBI) programme of work on freshwater biodiversity issues.

This appointment requires a graduate with a minimum of an Honours degree with a focus on ecology, enhanced by a minimum of 1 year freshwater-related experience and an interest in developing strong wetland-focussed competencies. GIS skills, knowledge of wetland soils and wetland ecological processes, and a Master’s degree would be an added advantage. The successful candidate must be in possession of a valid driver’s license, Code B, be willing to travel and have excellent organisational and administrative skills, and spoken and written command of English.

Key responsibilities:

  • Undertake field surveys and research projects, and produce scientific reports and or/papers under guidance of the Freshwater Biodiversity Unit leadership
  • Contribute to SANBI’s freshwater biodiversity assessment, monitoring and planning activities as required;
  • Participate in various fora relating to freshwater biodiversity matters in South Africa to develop and strengthen collaborations
  • Work with various information management systems and stakeholders to manage freshwater biodiversity data
  • Work together with the Freshwater team in achieving the programme of work for the Unit.

Salary commensurate with a range of inputs and outputs in terms of the SANBI career ladder for scientists.
