The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) requires a motivated individual with proven ability in using science and technology effectively and critically to collect, measure, process, analyse, display interpret, disseminate, utilise, evaluate and manage geographically related and spatially referenced information.

The incumbent will be responsible for developing innovative GISc technology and applications fulfilling the role of data analysis and interpretation, together with data acquisition, management and visualisation/mapping. Collaborate with data partners, data owners/custodians, developers and database administrators to meet the specifications of the data management plan.

The successful candidate requires a degree in Geoinformatics, or other related field or equivalent qualification, enhanced by at least 5 years working experience with proven technology applications in the following:

  • Server based GIS skills using ArcGIS Server or MapServer;
  • GIS programming and automation skills – ArcPy or Python spatial modules;
  • SQL Server or PostgreSQL experience is required.

The following would be advantageous:

  • Desktop GIS skills using ArcGIS Desktop and QGIS;
  • GIS programming against GIS REST APIs using JavaScript;
  • Statistical/Data analytics using R, SQL Server, Python or other;
  • Related RDBMS like MySQL, PostGIS development skills.

Candidates are required or must qualify to be affiliated with South African Geomatics Council (SAGS) as a GISc Technologist within a year after appointment. Practical experience as a GISc Technologist in the biodiversity or natural resources domain will be advantageous. The candidate must be in possession of a valid (unendorsed) Code B drivers’ license with one year’s practical driving experience.  The successful candidate must demonstrate a good spoken and written command of English, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

The appointee will be responsible for: 

  • Support the unit to develop, maintain, enhance and deliver an effective Enterprise Geospatial Information Management (EGIM) project and platform at SANBI;
  • Support users through the development and implementation of work processes, so maximising efficiency and effective use of the EGIM environment and GIS resources;
  • Maintain and promote sound data governance as required by relevant policies and legislation in line with international and national best practices, ensuring quality and efficiency of outputs;
  • Assist with requirements, implementation and monitoring of GIS infrastructure.

SANBI offers an annual salary of R444 693.00 and additional fringe benefits.
