The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) requires the services of a hardworking and self-motivated individual to assist with new building developments and maintenance of existing structures, buildings, irrigation and associated infrastructure at the Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden located in Worcester.
The successful candidate must be in possession of at least a grade 10 certificate and have sound interpersonal skills, the ability to communicate in English (read and write) with a minimum of 2 years’ relevant working experience in the construction and building environment.
The successful candidate must be able to assist with irrigation repairs, plumbing, painting, plastering, paving, brick- laying, tiling and general building maintenance as well as being able to work independently as well as in a small team.
The candidate must be able to communicate well and understand technical concepts in building, maintenance and the development of infrastructure. The incumbent must be prepared to do hard physical work in various environments, work on elevated places, do a lot of walking, carrying and work in noisy areas and will be exposed to hot sunny conditions. The incumbent may have to perform weekend, public holiday and standby duties as and when required.
The responsibilities include:
- Assist with the execution of building renovations, infrastructure maintenance and development projects, i.e. – roof repairs, painting, plastering, tiling, plumbing, paving, irrigation repairs, carpentry, welding etc.;
- Assist with specifying, ordering and fetching of building material and maintenance goods and assist with keeping record of such in the workshop;
- Lead and supervise a small 2 man team and assist other members of staff with general teamwork activities
- Maintain and assist in the servicing of machines, tools and equipment;
- Regularly assist in stock, assets, and quality control of all infrastructure, tools, equipment etc.;
- Maintain and help to manage the workshop in an orderly, safe, secure and neat manner;
- Comply with the Health and Safety policy (safe use of equipment, tools and machinery).
SANBI offers an annual salary of R115 437.00 with additional fringe benefits.
