Maintenance Assistant

The National Zoological Garden (NZG) is looking for well-qualified, experienced, hard-working, enthusiastic and motivated person to be appointed as Maintenance Assistant.

Amongst others, the successful applicant will be expected to perform the following duties:

• Maintain all public areas; walkways, parking areas, gardens, lawns
• Daily maintenance of machinery and to operate gardens related machinery (lawn mowers, chain saws, brush cutter, etc.)
• Assist with maintenance functions:
  1. Road and fence maintenance
  2. General maintenance of enclosures, reserve and public areas
  3. Maintenance projects and functions
• Assist with conservation projects:
  1. Alien Plant control in reserve
  2. Fire breaks and control.

Minimum requirements

• Grade 12
• 6-12 months’ work experience in gardening and general maintenance
• Knowledge in working with garden related machinery (lawn mowers, brush cutters, chain saws, pole pruners)
• Physically able to work with plants, machinery, in an outside environment
• Valid driver’s license
• Passion for gardening and maintenance
• Willingness to work under pressure
• Ability to work in a team and independently
• Good interpersonal and communication skills
• Understanding of gardens chemicals, the mixing and related safety precautions and application
• Have no allergies involving plants and animals. Such allergies must be declared in the interview process including how the applicant manages their allergies to work in this environment
• This person will be expected to be physically able to do manual labour in and out doors in inclement weather conditions
• Ability to work alternative weekends and public holidays.
