The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated and meticulous individual to carry out the imaging of museum specimens for the virtual museum of the Natural Science Collections Facility.
This position requires a national diploma in Photography or equivalent qualification at NQF 6 with 4 years of work experience in the relevant field of professional studio/still life photography; working with image-enhancing software and management of large numbers of digital images using a recognized digital asset management system or degree in Photography or equivalent qualification at NQF 7 with 2 years of work experience in the relevant field of professional studio/still life photography; working with image-enhancing software and management of large numbers of digital images using a recognized digital asset management system.
The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: experience in working with museum or other delicate heritage specimens would be an advantage, must be willing to travel in South Africa and to spend time away from the Natural Science Collections Facility (NSCF) base in Pretoria at institutions in various cities, excellent written and verbal communication skills, excellent analytical skills; highly motivated individual that has an ability to work with a diverse team and under pressure whilst being quality and safety conscious, and advanced computer literacy. The possession of a valid driver’s licence with at least one-year practical driving experience will be required.
Key responsibilities include:
- Contribute to the documentation of standards, processes and workflows and to a strategy for imaging of a wide range of natural science specimens;
- Carry out the photographing of target specimens in natural science collections under studio conditions;
- Conduct image enhancement using appropriate software where necessary to improve quality of images; and
- Conduct image management by developing the metadata and labels for each file and ensure that files are clearly organised and backed up according to agreed procedures using appropriate software.
