The National Zoological Garden (NZG) is a rapidly transforming facility and is part of the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI). It has an impressive animal collection, one breeding centre as well as a wildlife research centre. The NZG is well placed as an education and awareness platform for visitors comprising of educators, learners, students, special interest groups and the general public. The following challenging opportunities are in a process of being filled:

The National Zoological Garden is looking for a well-qualified, experienced, hard-working, enthusiastic and motivated persons to be appointed as: Postdoctoral Fellows x2 - Conservation Genomics

The successful applicants will be expected to perform the following duties:

  • Designing, initiating and promoting wildlife molecular genetic research projects focusing on the analysis of complex genetic datasets
  • Acquisition and supervision of post-graduate students
  • Publishing research results in peer reviewed ISI accredited journals
  • Presentation at and attendance of National and International conferences and workshops in related field
  • Establishment of key-collaborative relationships with National and International parties
  • Successful applications for research funding to support the research
  • Administrative duties related to research group and budget management

Minimum Requirements:

  • The candidate must be a South African citizen and should have a capacity and willingness to work independently and lead research efforts. The postdoctoral fellowships are open to anyone who has a PhD (at least submitted if not awarded) obtained within the last five years that is related to wildlife conservation genetics (e.g. molecular biology, genetics or bioinformatics). The applicants must demonstrate expertise in laboratory and analytical analyses of genomic data through prior training, peer reviewed publications, or work experience. The successful candidates will work as part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers.

Bursary value: Successful candidates will receive an annual salary of R350, 000.

Running expenses to cover project costs will be provided.
