The South African National Biodiversity Institute requires enthusiastic, responsible team players to provide effective, strategic leadership, management and coordination for the implementation of the Ecological Infrastructure for Water Security (EIWS) project in the demonstration catchments. The Project is a multi-faceted and multi-stakeholder project being implemented over five (5) years nationally and in selected catchments in two provinces. The project is funded by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) through the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA).

The appointment requires a relevant post-graduate degree or equivalent qualification in the Natural, Social or Environmental Sciences enhanced by 8 years’ relevant experience, of which at least 2 years’ should be in a managerial capacity, in working with partnerships, managing the implementation of large donor funded projects and communication with a range of stakeholders.

The incumbent must have experience in working in the fields of ecological infrastructure and/or natural resource management and/or conservation. Experience in project management, including budgeting and procurement, monitoring and evaluation. General understanding and working knowledge of the current water sector policy and legislative environment.

Understanding of how to work with and into communities of practice especially at a catchment scale. The successful candidate must have the ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, analytical thinking & ability to work independently and in a team, motivational and negotiation skills, accuracy, strategic thinking and communication and the ability to work with limited supervision.

Furthermore the suitable candidate must be in possession of a valid Code B driver’s license, as well as being willing and available to travel. The ability to maintain sound interpersonal relations and highly effective verbal and written communication capabilities are essential. Proficiency in MS Office is also a specific requirement for this post.

Key responsibilities:

  • Manage the implementation of Ecological Infrastructure for Water Security (EIWS) project activities and partnerships
  • Organize and facilitate stakeholder engagements and participate in key strategic engagements in support of project objectives
  • Implement planning and monitoring interventions, restoration projects and coordinate costing studies at the catchment level
  • Convene and participate in forums and platforms that support learning and capacity building.

SANBI offers an all-inclusive annual salary package of R733 257.
