The National Zoological Garden (NZG) is looking for well-qualified, experienced, hard-working, enthusiastic and motivated person to be appointed as Research Assistant: Molecular Disease Epidemiology.
Amongst others, the successful applicant will be expected to perform the following duties:
- The applicant will be responsible for timeous laboratory analysis of cases received for molecular diagnostics of infectious and parasitic diseases in wildlife.
- Respond to general enquiries and provide regular feedback to clients (internal and external).
- Provide a high quality internationally recognised level of service to internal and external clients.
- Maintain accurate records, logs and databases from sample receipt to final report.
- Assisting in laboratory management (inventory and equipment maintenance).
- Conduct research in the field of molecular diagnostics of infectious and parasitic diseases to improve on current technologies and knowledge.
- Keep up-to-date on new technologies and techniques in the field of molecular diagnostics.
Minimum requirements:
- National Diploma/BTech/BSc in molecular biology, biotechnology, virology, microbiology or related field
- 1 year work experience in a relevant field
- Be proficient in relevant molecular biology techniques (e.g. PCR, gel electrophoresis, qPCR, sequencing and next generation sequencing (preferable)) and associated analyses
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Computer literacy (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and email)
- Aptitude for research
- Ability to organize budget
- Ability to supervise interns.
Successful applicant must be prepared to undergo testing for allergies and TB and also vaccinations for tetanus, rabies and other needed vaccinations. A positive test will not preclude employment at the NZG.
