Researcher: Invasive Australian trees and shrubs

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a highly motivated individual to co-ordinate a programme of work on Australian trees and shrubs. The position requires someone with a background in biodiversity science who can co-ordinate robust scientific assessments of the impacts and threats alien plant species pose to the environment and assist with designing and monitoring control programmes.

The candidate should be in possession of an MSc or equivalent in a relevant field of biodiversity science with evidence of research experience in the form of at least three (3) first-authored publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals. The candidate should have at least two (2) years’ experience in biological science or biodiversity research (not including time spent on MSc research). The ability to lead a research programme is essential.

The candidate must be able to demonstrate advanced research skills, numeracy and literacy, good interpersonal relations, and good organisational and administrative skills. Effective verbal and written communication capabilities are essential. Experience with managing and researching biological invasions will be an added advantage. The suitable candidate must be in possession of a valid Code B driver’s license, and be willing to travel for extended periods.

Responsibilities include:

• Provide co-ordination and implementation of a science-based programme targeting alien grasses OR alien vines and creepers;
• Develop a national surveillance strategy to detect, identify and manage priority alien grasses OR alien vines and creepers;
• Develop and publish research on alien grasses OR alien vines and creepers;
• Initiate and maintain partnerships with key institutions to deliver on SANBI’s mandate; and
• Supervise junior staff, students, interns and research assistants.

SANBI offers an annual salary commensurate with a range of inputs and outputs in terms of the SANBI career ladder for Scientists.
