Internship opportunity based at Kirstenbosch

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is leading the project titled ‘Building biodiversity knowledge for action in Southern Africa: Spatial Biodiversity Assessment, Prioritization and Planning in South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique and Malawi’ (‘SBAPP Regional Project’), funded by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the Fonds Français pour l’Environnement Mondial (FFEM). The project, which runs until June 2027, aims to improve biodiversity assessments for species and ecosystems in the four countries, and assist with their application in biodiversity prioritisation and planning.

SANBI is pleased to announce a call for applications for a Biodiversity Project Finance Management internship under the SBAPP Project. The internship programme provides an opportunity for graduates to gain practical experience in project financial management within biodiversity and environmental programmes.

Requirements:

Bachelors completed (or equivalent to NQF 7). Candidates must be enthusiastic and have a keen interest in the conservation of biodiversity. No prior working experience is required but a strong academic record, which includes a financial accounting module at university will be an advantage. A driving license with at least one year’s driving experience will be an added advantage. The internship is only available to South African citizens and will be awarded in line with national equity targets.

 Conditions:

  • Applicants must be South African citizens
  • Applicants must not be enrolled for higher degrees for the 2026 academic year

 Key Responsibilities:

The intern will support financial and administrative functions within the SBAPP Project, including:

  • Assisting with project financial tracking and expenditure monitoring
  • Supporting preparation of financial and donor reports
  • Assisting with procurement and financial administration processes
  • Supporting financial compliance and record management
  • Maintaining expenditure and budget tracking records using Excel and internal systems
  • Assisting with general financial and project adminsitrative duties as required
