The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated individual to support internal and external science communications strategy, write and disseminate publicity material, respond to inquiries from the public and media, and coordinate and edit  newsletters and website content including the SANBI Gazette and the External Science Newsletter.

This position requires a Degree in Natural Science and Communications or equivalent qualification with NQF 7. Honours or equivalent degree at NQF 8 will be an added advantage. This position also requires 6 years’ work experience in a relevant field, 3 years of which should be in supervisory position(s).

The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: science communication course, research capability, interest in reading,  passionate about biodiversity, ability to engage with people, public, the scientific community and scientists, Quick at putting content together and reading, detail consciousness, disciplined, ability to work independently, takes initiative, collaborative, meets deadlines, multitasking, adaptable, aware of changes in the scientific community advanced planning, organising, and problem solving skills; excellent communication (both verbal and written), report writing skills, people management skills, excellent computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including (Ms Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Outlook) will be advantageous. The possession of a valid driver’s licence with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel is essential.

Key Performance Responsibilities include:

  • Provide science – based content generation, copy writing, content research and interpretation
  • Technical editing of science-based content/copy generated and proofreading of newly designed material (post-layout/copy-editing)
  • Coordination and capacity building of science communication within SANBI
  • Edit and finalise four SANBI Gazette’s per year including press releases, media statements, events coverage (produce articles) and popular science articles and features.
