South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) requires two highly motivated scientists to conduct taxonomic research on the South African flora in accordance with the Biosystematics Research Strategy; disseminate research findings through publications; curate herbarium collections for certain plant families and provide information services for specialist families.

Appointments require qualifications and experience as follows:

Post 1: MSc in an appropriate field of plant science. One year of experience in plant taxonomic research is required. First authorship of one peer-reviewed paper on plant taxonomy published in an internationally recognised journal is a requirement. Must have potential ability to generate research funding.

Post 2: The successful candidate must be in possession of a MSc  in a field of botany, enhanced by a minimum of 5 years’ proven experience in plant taxonomic research (in the form of at least five first authored papers in peer-reviewed journals), evidence of ability to secure research funding, regular conference presentation and experience in herbarium processes.

For both positions, the following applies. A Code EB driver’s licence is essential. Proficiency in MS Office is essential while knowledge of Brahms would be an advantage. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to maintain sound interpersonal relations and have an excellent spoken and written command of English, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Key responsibilities will include to:

• Design and carry out taxonomic research projects in line with SANBI’s strategy and priorities, and apply for external funding;
• Publish/disseminate results of research and scientific compilation (including e-Flora);
• Scientific curation of herbarium specimens;
• Plant identifications and answering enquiries related to specialist plant families;
• Mentoring/training of junior scientists (optional, depending on career ladder level).

Salary commensurate with a range of inputs and outputs in terms of the SANBI career ladder for scientists.
