The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is seeking to appoint a highly motivated individual to conduct taxonomic research on plant families in line with the Biosystematics Research Strategy and disseminate research findings through publications; to contribute to the SA National Plant Checklist and e-Flora; to assume responsibility for the identification and curation of plant families which includes keeping databases updated with latest information concerning these families.
The appointment requires an MSc in a field of botany, specialising in taxonomy/systematics, with evidence of research experience in the form of at least one first-authored taxonomic publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Applicants should have at least one year of experience in taxonomy and taxonomic research and working knowledge of herbarium processes or curation of collections, excellent spoken and written command of English, the ability to work under pressure and be accurate and proficiency in MS Office Programmes. A valid Code B (unendorsed) driver’s licence with one year practical driving experience is essential.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Design and carry out taxonomic research projects and publish/disseminate research results;
- Curate plant families;
- Contribute to the e-Flora and plant checklist;
- Plant identifications and answering of enquiries related to specialist plant families;
SANBI offers an annual salary commensurate with a range of inputs and outputs in terms of the SANBI career ladder for Scientists.
