The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) requires a motivated individual to manage and quality assure the preparation and remediation (structure/format, coding, review, entry, validation, editing) of large biodiversity datasets ingested from SANBI and data partners, through application of standards and practices that maximise the opportunity for capacity development in data management within SANBI. To improve BIM’s data management workflows and services through analysis, identification and interpretation of trends and patterns in datasets.

This position requires a degree in Natural Sciences, Life Sciences  (Ecology, Biology, Botany), Computer Science, or equivalent qualification with NQF 7. Postgraduate qualification or equivalent qualification at NQF 8 will be an added advantage. This position also requires 6 years’ experience in the relevant field, 3 years of which should be in supervisory position(s).

The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: extensive experience in developing methods and procedures for complex business rules; in-depth knowledge and experience in working with global and South African biodiversity data management standards and schemes; comprehensive knowledge and experience in working with relational database management and related web-based software systems including but not limited to SQL, SQL server, JAVA and XML; proven ability and experience in programming with python and R including experience working with ESRI GIS software; proven ability and experience to work in multi-faceted and multi-stakeholder projects, with budget, procurement, monitoring, and evaluation requirements; The successful candidate must have the ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, analytical thinking, ability to work independently, and in a diverse team; advanced knowledge and understanding of policies, procedures, processes, practices, systems and frameworks related to biodiversity data management; advanced planning, organizing, negotiation skills, accuracy and attention to detail, strategic thinking, and ability to work with limited supervision are essential; excellent communication skills (both verbal and written); excellent computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including (Ms Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Outlook). The possession of a valid driver’s licence with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel is essential.

Key Performance Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and maintain databases, data analytics and complementary strategies that improve the quality of SANBI’s data holdings;
  • Manage the acquisition of data from data partners and secondary data sources;
  • Managing all ETL ((Extract, Transform and Load) processes across all relevant systems;
  • Manage all ETL processes across BIM systems;
  • Identify, analyse, and interpret trends and patterns in data sets; and
  • Ensure junior staff receive scientific and technical training, and mentorship.
