The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) requires the services of a hardworking and self-motivated individual to develop and maintain horticultural activities in cultivated and natural areas, manage staff and maintain the equipment used at the Garden.

The successful candidate must have sound interpersonal relations, good staff supervisory skills, problem solving skills, good spoken and written command of English and one other official language will be advantageous. The position requires the candidate to have Grade 10 certificate with 5 years’ relevant experience working including supervisory experience. It is essential the successful candidate be in possession of a code B driver’s licence with at least one year’s practical driving experience. It would be advantageous if the successful candidate has experience in botanical garden maintenance and development, a Public driving permit and a pesticide spraying certificate.

The successful candidate must be able to work independently as well as in a team and use a variety of equipment and tools used which require physical labour and working outdoors, sometimes under adverse conditions as well as working with materials that may be poisonous/toxic. In addition, the candidate must have the ability to plan daily, weekly and longer term activities for these sections.

The responsibilities include:

  • Garden Planning & Maintenance - Assist with drafting and supervising of implementation of work plans for team members;
  • Garden Development - Maintain pathways, assist with water reticulation and repair of wind pumps, check/repair fences as well as Supervise and organize the team;
  • Assist with labelling, plant recording, correct weed and alien removal and waste control;
  • Maintain firebreaks, ensure lawns cut, clearing alien vegetation and maintain machinery and tools;
  • People management - supervise, mentoring, interviewing, performance assessments etc of the team;
  • Provide professional and reliable client services, ensure all facilities are clean and in working condition;
  • Professional and safe handling of any cash;
  • Compliance with the Health and Safety policy.

SANBI offers an annual salary R136 800.00 with additional fringe benefits.
