The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for two highly motivated, efficient, and enthusiastic individuals to process specimen backlogs and upgrade datasets for the Natural Science Collections Facility (NSCF) partner institutions.

This position requires a degree in Life Sciences, Ecology, Biology, Zoology, or equivalent qualification at NQF 7. A postgraduate qualification or equivalent qualification at NQF 8 will be an added advantage. This position also requires a minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience in a natural science museum curation environment.

The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: a high level of attention to detail;  ability to work in a team and to supervise and train other staff; experience in carrying out identifications of at least one of the following groups: reptiles, amphibians, birds or mammals; working with the Specify collections management database including capturing and updating specimen records and taxon trees; understanding of curation principles, including scientific curation; excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills; excellent computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including (Ms Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Outlook). The successful candidates must be willing to travel nationally and to spend extended periods at museums in various locations.

Key performance responsibilities include:

  • Ensure data verification and management.
  • Manage physical curation process.
  • Perform scientific curation duties.
