The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated individual to provide technological direction and capability to support corporate services.

This position requires a degree in Information Technology, Computer Sciences or equivalent qualification with NQF 7. A postgraduate qualification in Information Technology, Computer Sciences or equivalent qualification with NQF 8 will be an added advantage.  This position also requires 4 years’ work experience in the relevant field.

The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) Certification is essential; 4 years proven (hands-on) work experience as a System Security Engineer or Information Security Engineer; 4 years proven (hands-on) work experience in building and maintaining security systems; Thorough understanding of database and operating system security; 4 years proven (hands-on) work experience in security systems, including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, anti-virus software, authentication systems, log management, content filtering, etc; 4 years proven (hands-on) experience with network security and networking technologies and with system, security, and network monitoring tools; Thorough understanding of the latest security principles, techniques, and protocols; 4 years proven (hands-on) experience with web related technologies (Web applications, Web Services, Service Oriented Architectures) and of network/web related protocols; Proficiency in languages/tools such as C++, Java, Node, Python, Ruby, Go, or Power Shell; a clear-thinker able to solve problems and see all sides of a situation; ability to manage high pressure and be able to juggle with multiple stakeholders each with their own challenges whilst multi skilling across multi projects simultaneously; demonstrate outstanding stakeholder engagement and relationships management; attention to detail in dealing with budgeting, financial management, and reporting; advanced planning, organizing, problem solving skills; proven ability to work under pressure with diverse team while being quality, cost, and safety conscious; extensive knowledge and experience in working with legislation, policies, procedures, processes, practices, systems, and frameworks related to provision of information technology support and services; excellent communication skills at all levels (both verbal and written); excellent computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including (Ms Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Outlook). The possession of a valid driver’s licence with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel is essential.

Key Performance Responsibilities include:

  • Champion server configuration standards and monitor performance of servers;
  • Perform server administration and reporting responsibilities;
  • Perfect implementation and monitoring of security measures for the protection of computer systems, networks and information;
  • Champion configuration of security infrastructure and implementation of security tools, policies, and procedures; and
  • Participate in leading management of regional offices.
