The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated individual to safeguard the information assets of SANBI, protect systems by defining access privilege, control structures and resources as well as to implement information security improvements.

This position requires a degree in Information Technology, Computer Sciences or equivalent qualification with NQF 7. A postgraduate qualification in information Technology, Computer Sciences or equivalent qualification with NQF 8 will be an added advantage. This position also requires 6 years of work experience in the relevant field, 3 years of which should be at supervisory level.

The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) Certification;6 years proven (hands-on) work experience as a System Security Engineer or Information Security Engineer; 6 years proven (hands-on) work experience in building and maintaining security systems; Thorough understanding of database and operating system security; 6 years proven (hands-on) work experience in security systems, including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, anti-virus software, authentication systems, log management, content filtering, etc; 6 years proven (hands-on) experience with network security and networking technologies and with system, security, and network monitoring tools; Thorough understanding of the latest security principles, techniques, and protocols; 6 years proven (hands-on) experience with web related technologies (Web applications, Web Services, Service Oriented Architectures) and of network/web related protocols; Proficiency in languages/tools such as C++, Java, Node, Python, Ruby, Go, or Power Shell; a clear-thinker able to solve problems and see all sides of a situation; ability to manage high pressure and be able to juggle with multiple stakeholders each with their own challenges whilst multi skilling across multi projects simultaneously; demonstrate outstanding stakeholder engagement and relationships management; attention to detail in dealing with budgeting, financial management, and reporting; advanced conscious; extensive knowledge and experience in working with legislation, policies, procedures, processes, practices, systems, and frameworks related to provision of information technology support and services; excellent communication skills at all levels (both verbal and written); excellent computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including (Ms Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Outlook). The possession of a valid driver’s licence with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel is essential.

Key performance responsibilities include:

  • Champion implementation and monitoring of security measures;
  • Perfect configuration and troubleshooting of various infrastructure devices and services;
  • Ensure daily cyber security operational activities are implemented, monitored and reported; and
  • Participate in projects for implementation of technologies.
