Taxon-specific Researcher – Alien Cacti and Succulents

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a highly motivated to co-ordinate a programme on Alien Cacti and Succulents. The position requires someone with a biodiversity science and who can co-ordinate robust scientific assessments of the impact and threats of these invasive alien plant species on the environment.

The candidate should be in possession of an MSc or equivalent in a relevant field of biodiversity science with evidence of research experience in the form of at least three first-authored publication in a peer-reviewed journal. The candidate should have at least two (2) to three (3) years’ experience in biological science or biodiversity research.  The ability to lead a research programme is essential. The candidate must be able to demonstrate advanced research skills, numeracy and literacy, good interpersonal relations, good organisational and administrative skills. Effective verbal and written communication capabilities are essential. Training on research on biological invasion will be an added advantage. Furthermore, the suitable candidate must be in possession of a valid Code B driver’s license, as well as be willing to travel.

Responsibilities include:

• Provide co-ordination and implementation of a science-based programme targeting Invasive Cacti and Succulents;
• Develop a national surveillance strategy to detect, identify and manage priority/targeted invasive Cacti and Succulents;
• Develop and publish research on Invasive Cacti and Succulents;
• Initiate and maintain partnerships with key institutions to deliver on SANBI mandate;
• Supervise junior staff, students, interns and research assistants

SANBI offers an annual salary commensurate with a range of inputs and outputs in terms of the SANBI career ladder for Scientists.
