The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a highly motivated individual to co-ordinate a programme on alien cacti and succulents. The position requires someone with a biodiversity science background who can co-ordinate robust scientific analyses of the impacts, threats, and options to manage plant invasions.

The candidate should be in possession of an MSc or equivalent in a relevant field of biodiversity science with evidence of research experience in the form of at least three first-authored peer-reviewed publication in reputable journals. The ability to lead a research programme is essential. The candidate must be able to demonstrate advanced research skills, numeracy and literacy, good interpersonal relations, good organisational and administrative skills. Effective verbal and written communication capabilities are essential. Training in research on biological invasions will be an added advantage. Furthermore, the suitable candidate must be in possession of a valid Code B driver’s license, as well as be willing to travel.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide co-ordination and implementation of a science-based programme targeting alien cacti and succulents.
  • Develop a national surveillance strategy to detect, identify and manage priority/targeted alien cacti and succulents.
  • Develop and publish research on alien cacti and succulents.
  • Initiate and maintain partnerships with key institutions to deliver on SANBI mandate.
  • Supervise and develop junior staff, students, interns and research assistants.

SANBI offers an annual salary commensurate with a range of inputs and outputs in terms of the SANBI career ladder for Scientists.
