The Biodiversity Biobanks South Africa, which is hosted by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated individual to be responsible for providing both the technical and administrative support required to ensure the daily operations of the Veterinary Wildlife Services Biobank of South African National Parks in Skukuza, Kruger National Park. This includes platform provision for both external clients and internal departments with regards to sample submissions, sample collection, processing and banking. The position reports to the Biobank Curator.

This position requires a Degree in Life Sciences, Ecology, Biology, Botany, or equivalent qualification with NQF 7. Postgraduate degree or equivalent degree at NQF 8 will be an added advantage. 3 years’ experience in Biobank Management environment, with 1 year experience in research, procurement, logistical and records management, The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: ability to process samples in timely manner, ability to follow standard operating procedures and protocols when performing techniques, good verbal and written communication skills, ability to keep accurate records, ability to work as part of a team, ability to manage workloads and meet deadlines, good organisational skills. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to attend relevant / applicable short courses in work area, have aptitude for science and technology research, have an ability to carry out detailed and accurate work, be flexible in meeting different work demands, have experience in laboratory work as well as in field work in remote areas involving physically demanding activities and working with potentially dangerous animals. Computer literacy with database management experience and possession of a valid driver’s license are essential, the position requires residence in Skukuza and a willingness to be away from the home base for work purposes.

Key Performance Responsibilities include:

  • Render support services within the Unit
  • Ensure laboratory coordination and sample management
  • Perform research duties
  • Attend to administration and financial duties
  • Provide research support to scientists, and supervision to interns
