The South African National Biodiversity Institute is looking for a self-motivated individual to provide technical support for detection and eradication of emerging invasive species in the region through managing field trips, data-co-ordination, awareness raising, scientific literature searches and administration.

This position requires the candidate to be in possession of an advanced diploma or degree in Life Sciences, Ecology, Biology, Botany, or equivalent qualification with NQF 7. Postgraduate qualification or equivalent qualification at NQF 8 will be an added advantage. 3 years’ experience in the relevant field, with knowledge of project and event management.

The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: extensive experience in stakeholder engagement and relationship management; advanced experience in the implementation of relevant legislation, policies, procedures, processes, and regulatory framework relevant to invasion biology; good project management skills including systemic visualization of various projects entailing a programme; attention to detail in dealing with budgeting, excellent financial management, reporting and procurement skills; advance knowledge for planning and organizing, and statistical reports writing skills; in-depth organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills; excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills; excellent computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including (MS Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Outlook). The possession of a valid driver’s license with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel is essential.

Key Performance Responsibilities include:

  • Support the Regional and Departmental Units to achieve their outcomes
  • Provide assistance to research projects
  • Execute specimen collection duties
  • Effective management of the plant and spotter database
  • Execute administrative duties diligently
