Biological Invasions Directorate
Contract Position - ending on 31 March 2020

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) requires a highly motivated, efficient and enthusiastic person to provide technical support to a programme focused on invasive alien species.

This position requires the successful candidate to be in possession of a 3 year Degree or National Diploma in an appropriate Biological Science discipline enhanced by minimum of 2 years’ relevant working experience.  The successful candidate will be required to work systematically and demonstrate an ability to plan and conduct field trips. It is essential for the incumbent to have sound computer skills and experience in MS Office, good presentation and scientific writing skills.

The successful incumbent must demonstrate the ability to maintain sound interpersonal relations and have an excellent spoken and written command of English, be analytical and problem solving skills.  Ability to take initiative, function independently and work well as part of team. It is essential that the candidate be in possession of a valid (unendorsed) Code B drivers license plus proven driving experience and be willing to travel nationally.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide support to the regional unit (manage field trips, awareness raising, scientific literature searches);
  • Assist with research on invasive species and management a plant record database and a spotter database and network;
  • Responsible for data co-ordination for the regional unit;
  • Collect plants and contribute to new plant records;
  • Support general management of regional unit (finances and administration).

SANBI offers an all-inclusive annual salary package of R332 190.75.
