The National Zoological Garden is looking for well-qualified, experienced, hard-working, enthusiastic and motivated person to be appointed as a Veterinary Nurse: Centre for Wildlife Health.
Amongst others, the successful applicant will be expected to perform the following duties:
- Assist veterinarians during consultations, examinations and treatments
- Coordinate patient admission and discharge
- Responsible for the welfare of animals in the animal hospital
- Assist with the preparation and support for surgery, feeding, a high standard of health and hygiene, and environmental enrichment
- Administering of drugs, do stock control and order drugs and other veterinary supplies and equipment
- Perform diagnostic laboratory tests and assist with diagnostic radiographs
- Assist with procedures involving radiographs, ultrasound, endoscopy and electrocardiography
- Responsible for veterinary equipment maintenance
- Record and maintain clinical and office records
- Undertake other administrative and reception duties
- Assist in animal husbandry and game capture operations
- Provide technical assistance to veterinarians and researchers with regards to research projects and activities
- Supervise veterinary assistants.
Minimum requirements
- National Diploma or Degree in Veterinary Nursing or equivalent
- Registration with the South African Veterinary Council as a Veterinary Nurse
- Possess a valid driver’s license
- Computer literacy (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and email)
- Candidates must be in good health and able to handle animals with confidence and patience
- Experience and enthusiasm for zoo and exotic animal nursing
- Ability to demonstrate supervisory skills
- An aptitude for research and science.
Successful applicant must be prepared to undergo testing for allergies and TB and also vaccinations for tetanus, rabies and other needed vaccinations. A positive test will not preclude employment at the NZG.
