The National Zoological Garden (NZG) is a rapidly transforming facility and is part of the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI). It has an impressive animal collection, one breeding centre as well as a wildlife research centre. The NZG is well placed as an education and awareness platform for visitors comprising of educators, learners, students, special interest groups and the general public. The Work Integrated Learning opportunities will be offered to candidates who are registered at a higher education institution for their Work-Integrated-Learning module/s, who are eager to learn more about animal husbandry and tourism. This programme will run for a period of 12 months (January-December). During this time, candidates will receive a stipend, while gaining invaluable knowledge and experience.

Work Integrated Learners: Nature Conservation (x15 Pretoria, x2 Mokopane)

Post Description:

  • The candidate(s) will work in the conservation department with a diverse animal collection under the mentorship of a curator or any other delegated competent personnel.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled for a relevant tertiary qualification in Nature Conservation and having to complete the work-integrated-learning / experiential training module/s.
  • Completed theory component with no outstanding subjects.
  • UNISA Students – they must be eligible to register for 3 or more WIL (Nature Conservation Application Modules) for the coming year.
  • Candidates should provide an official letter from their institution of higher learning indicating that they require experiential learning as part of their studies or to enable them to complete their studies and graduate.

Tourism / Ecotourism Work Integrated Learners (x4 Pretoria)

Post Description:

  • The candidate(s) will work in the field of Tourism assisting NZG staff at our Guest Relations Centre, Customer Service and General Tourism Services. This is only an opportunity to complete the compulsory work-integrated learning / experiential training module.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled for a relevant tertiary qualification in Tourism / Ecotourism and having to complete the work-integrated-learning / experiential training
  • Completed theory component with no outstanding subjects.
  • Candidates should provide an official letter from the learning institution indicating that they require experiential learning in order to complete their studies or graduate.

Successful applicant must be prepared to undergo testing for allergies and TB and also vaccinations for tetanus, rabies and other needed vaccinations. A positive test will not prevent employment at the NZG.
