For other projects, please contact us before submitting an application to check if your proposal is suitable.

Honours projects

Masters projects

Doctoral projects

Bursary values: (to cover living expenses and university fees)

  • Honours: R80 000 for one year only
  • Masters: R120 000/year for 2 years
  • Doctoral: R150 000/year for 3 years

Project running expenses will be covered separately to the bursaries and will vary depending on the project.

Requirements:

Candidates must be pro-active, enthusiastic, and interested in doing excellent research that can make a difference. Student bursaries are only available to South African citizens and will be awarded in line with national equity targets. Students need to apply to university programmes themselves and the bursary is conditional upon them securing their position in a postgraduate programme and have provisional acceptance from prospective academic supervisors, one of which should be from SANBI. Funding is only available for full time studies.  Existing studies will not be supported.

Application:

Each application is to be accompanied by a standard bursary application cover sheet (see attached).  Applications are to include a cover letter, full CV, certified copies of ID and academic record/transcript; two letters of academic reference, letters from prospective supervisors (SANBI and university) indicating willingness to supervise, provisional registration from the university and a one-page project outline for Honours applications or a two-page project outline for Masters and Doctoral applications. Send all documents to students@sanbi.org.za with “SANBI postgraduate bursaries” in the subject line.
