1. Environmental Theme Days and Weeks
The following environmental days/weeks are celebrated annually:
- World Wetland Day in February
- World Water Week in March
- Plant Conservation Day in April
- Biodiversity Week in May
- World Environmental Week in June
- Arbor Week in September
- Weedbuster Week in October
The celebrations of these environmental theme days take the form of CAPS lessons facilitated in the Garden as well as small events in schools and in collaboration with other stakeholders. They involve relevant partnership organisations and stakeholders and aim to develop meaningful awareness and learning as well as lead to the participants into taking some form of environmental action.
2. Holiday Programmes
Three holiday programmes are facilitated annually during the official school holiday periods each year. The programme aims to provide edutainment through fun activities linked to biodiversity. The programme caters for various age groups which include beneficiaries in places such as children’s homes, church groups and environmental groups are also reached.
3. Combating Biodiversity Crimes
The combating biodiversity crimes programme aims to raise awareness about biodiversity crimes that are prevalent in the area around Thohoyandou National Botanical Gardens. These programmes are facilitated by raising awareness focusing on threatened or endangered plant and animal species within the context of the garden and surrounding area of the Vhembe district.
4. Communicating the NBA Findings
Findings of the National Biodiversity Assessment (NBA) are communicated to a broad spectrum of the society through a range of products such as brochures and posters and awareness-raising opportunities to various communities.
