Invasive alien species pose significant threats to human livelihoods, economic development and biodiversity. These threats are likely to be exacerbated by climate change.
In an attempt to claim back our land Working for Water manages established invasive species. However, to date , little has been done to manage new incursions.
To combat these new incursions, SANBI’s Invasive Species Programme (ISP) was established with funding from Working for Water and the Department of Environmental Affairs.
The Invasive Species Programme (ISP) aims to detect invasive species; assess the risk these species pose to South Africa and attempt eradication of high risk species with limited distribution. This is based on the guidelines provided by the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (NEM: BA), in particular, Category 1a listed species.
