Invasive alien species pose significant threats to human livelihoods, economic development and biodiversity. These threats are likely to be exacerbated by climate change.
To combat these new incursions, SANBI’s Directorate on Biodiversity Evidence (DBE) formally known as Invasive Species Programme, was established with funding from Working for Water and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE).
The Invasive Species Programme (ISP)Directorate of Biodiversity Evidence (DBE) aims to detect emerging invasive species; assess the risk these species pose to South Africa and attempt eradication of high risk species with limited distribution. This is based on the guidelines provided by the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (NEM: BA), in particular, Category 1a listed species.
