There are over 100 000 known species of plants, animals and fungi in South Africa. Scientists believe that there are at least another 50 000 species in the country that have not yet been discovered and/ or named.
This site aims to compile, co-ordinate and update known information in the form of:
- Annotated checklists of species.
- These checklists will eventually be expanded to co-ordinate all information at the species level through the South African node of the Encyclopedia of Life.
Currently a number of checklists including 10 000 species from different animal groups have been uploaded on the SANBI web page and are publicly accessible on the internet.
